The Alterrain Pro is a true jogging stroller, and BOB Gear approves it for running from 8 months. It brings SmoothShox suspension, 16 in rear air tires, adjustable tracking, a handbrake and a one-hand standing fold. BabyGearLab gave it 9.5 for quality and called the suspension impressive, ranking it fifth of ten joggers. The catch is size and cost: $829.99, 32.3 lb, and 39.3 in long folded. For regular runners on trails it makes sense. For mostly walking, it is more stroller than you need.

Who is the BOB Gear Alterrain Pro for?

The BOB Gear Alterrain Pro is for parents who run regularly and want a stroller built for it. BOB lists it at $829.99, with a 75 lb weight limit and a 44 in height limit, and says there is no maximum age, only those limits. BOB approves jogging and off-road use from 8 months, and walking in the stroller seat from 8 weeks. Before then, a baby rides in an infant car seat on an adapter, sold separately. BabyGearLab ranked it fifth of ten jogging strollers and recommends it mainly for serious runners who don't mind the weight. At 32.3 lb and 46 in long, it is a lot of stroller for quick errands. If you rarely run, a lighter all-terrain stroller will be easier to live with.

How does the Alterrain Pro ride and steer?

BOB Gear lists SmoothShox suspension, air-filled tires (12 in front, 16 in rear), a swivel-locking front wheel and adjustable front wheel tracking. BabyGearLab scored it 8.6 for maneuverability and called the suspension impressive, saying the shocks help reduce fatigue, though unlike some BOB models they do not adjust. Once the reviewers set the tracking, which took a little practice, the stroller rolled true and straight. Its weight showed in the push test: it rolled 27 ft, against about 40 ft for some rivals. The reviewers also said it is not their favorite indoors, where the length makes tight turns harder. On trails, gravel and broken pavement, this is where it shines.

How big is the Alterrain Pro when folded?

BOB Gear lists the Alterrain Pro at 32.3 lb, and BabyGearLab measured 31.4 lb, one of the heaviest in its group. BOB calls it a one-hand, one-step quick standing fold, with a fold lock lever and a carry handle. Folded with the wheels on, it measures 39.3 x 25.5 x 16 in; with the rear wheels off, 33 x 21.5 x 13 in. BabyGearLab measured about 17,357 cubic inches and called it one of the largest folds among strollers with a swivel front wheel, though it rolls like luggage when folded. Popping the rear wheels off helps in a smaller trunk. It is not a carry-on stroller.

Is the Alterrain Pro comfortable and safe?

The BOB Gear Alterrain Pro seat goes from fully upright to near-flat with a one-hand adjustment, though BabyGearLab needed two hands. BOB lists compression padding, a ventilated seatback and canopy, and a 5-point no-rethread harness. The water-resistant canopy has UPF 50+ protection and a peek-and-chat window with a magnetic closure, and BabyGearLab said it covers almost down to the knee. The seat interior is 14.5 in wide and 20 in tall. The handlebar adjusts from 31 to 48 in, which helps when parents differ in height. BabyGearLab scored kid comfort 7.2. BOB does not state a safety certification on the page.

How much storage does the Alterrain Pro have?

BOB Gear lists an XL zip-top cargo basket and five pockets: two in the seat, two on the seatback and a phone pocket at the handlebar. The zip top keeps things from bouncing out on a run. BOB does not give a weight limit, and BabyGearLab lists 10 lb, which it called about average for jogging strollers. That is enough for a diaper bag and water bottles, but not a big grocery run. A handlebar console is sold separately.

Scroll through the stages below; the 3D stroller changes as you go. Drag it to turn it.

  1. 01 · The early months

    Seat, reclined

From 8 weeks for walking; from 8 months for jogging or off-road, per BOB Gear. Near-flat recline with one-hand adjustment; fully upright seating

  2. 02 · Sitting up, through the toddler years

    Seat, upright

The seat is rated to 75 lb and 44 in, so most children can ride until they no longer need a stroller.

Can you run with the Alterrain Pro?

Yes. BOB Gear sells the Alterrain Pro as a jogging stroller and lists it "From 8 months in stroller seat (jogging/off-road)." From 8 weeks the child can ride in the seat for walking only, and BOB says there is no maximum age, just the 75 lb and 44 in limits. Before running, lock the swivel front wheel. Running gear includes a handbrake for downhill control, SmoothShox suspension, adjustable tracking and a wrist strap. BabyGearLab scored its run-ability 7.0, above average, and said it ran straight once tracking was set, but found the handbrake stiff and the weight tiring. BOB's general FAQ adds never to jog with an infant or with an infant car seat attached.
