Bugaboo Fox 5 Review: The Same Stroller as the Renew, for Less?

Short answer: The Bugaboo Fox 5 is worth it on sale or used, because the Fox 5 Renew that replaced it keeps the same frame and features. The Fox 5 weighs 26.9 lb with the seat, includes a bassinet and rides on 12 in rear wheels. Its basket holds 22 lb. Check parts and recalls first.

Previous model. Bugaboo has replaced it with the Bugaboo Fox 5 Renew. Read our Bugaboo Fox 5 Renew review.

The Fox 5 is the same stroller at heart as the Fox 5 Renew. Bugaboo says the Renew keeps all the original's features and adds recycled fabrics, new colors, a breathable mattress, a longer apron and a small pocket. Bugaboo lists both at 26.9 lb with the seat. The Renew costs $1,499, so a Fox 5 with its bassinet at a real discount is the better buy. Check that the bassinet, adapters and canopy are included, and that the fold and brake work.

Who is the Bugaboo Fox 5 for?

The Bugaboo Fox 5 suits parents who want a premium full-size stroller from birth but would rather not pay full price. Bugaboo's US support page now marks it 'No longer available' and points to the Fox 5 Renew, so today you will find it secondhand, refurbished or as leftover stock. It came with a bassinet and a toddler seat, so one frame covers birth to about 4 years. Bugaboo says the Renew keeps all the features parents loved about the original, which makes a well-kept Fox 5 a smart way to get the same stroller for less. It is best for families who mostly push on pavement and park paths. If you want room for a second child, or a stroller to carry up stairs every day, look elsewhere.

How does the Fox 5 ride and steer?

The Bugaboo Fox 5 rolls on puncture-proof wheels, 8.5 in at the front and 12 in at the back, per Bugaboo. Its front wheels can lock for rougher ground. Reviewed found it smooth on pavement and fine on gravel roads, though bumpier than an all-terrain jogger, and said it did not hold up well on grass or rough trails. The reviewer called it a jack of all trades rather than a true off-road stroller, and running is not recommended. Bugaboo says the Renew keeps all the original's features, so the ride should feel the same. Bugaboo's refurbished listing calls it a comfort all-terrain stroller; read that as park paths, not trails. On a used stroller, check the wheels for flat spots and make sure the suspension does not knock.

How big is the Fox 5 when folded?

Bugaboo lists the Fox 5 at 26.9 lb with the seat and 28.6 lb with the bassinet. It folds in one piece to 17.3 x 23.6 x 35.4 in and stands on its own, or to 35 x 20.9 x 13.4 in if you take the seat off first. Reviewed found it opens and closes with one hand. Bugaboo lists the Fox 5 Renew at the same 26.9 lb, so the newer model brings no weight saving. If your trunk is shallow, the two-piece fold, with the seat lifted off first, may fit better than the tall one-piece fold. The one-piece fold is tall, so measure your trunk. It is not an airline carry-on stroller.

Is the Fox 5 comfortable and safe?

The Bugaboo Fox 5 comes with a bassinet with an aerated mattress, per Bugaboo, so a newborn can lie flat from day one. Later, the reversible seat lets your child face you or the world. Reviewed counted three seat positions, from reclined to upright, a footrest that extends by up to 2 in and a harness for children up to 50 lb. The canopy is rated UPF 50+. The Renew adds a breathable, double-sided bassinet mattress, a longer apron and a pocket for small items, per Bugaboo, but the seat and harness are the same. When buying used, check the harness webbing, buckle and canopy fabric.

How much storage does the Fox 5 have?

Bugaboo rates the Bugaboo Fox 5 underseat basket at 22 lb, or 12 gallons. That is less than some full-size rivals that take 30 lb. Reviewed found the basket well made but too small for a diaper bag, with no storage behind the seat and no cup or phone holder on the handlebar. Plan on a clip-on organizer or a backpack-style bag. Bugaboo does not list a bigger basket for the Fox 5 Renew.

Should you buy a Fox 5 on sale or a new Fox 5 Renew?

Bugaboo's own FAQ answers most of this. It says the Fox 5 Renew still includes all the features parents loved about the original Fox 5, and the changes are recycled fabrics, new colors, a breathable mattress, a longer apron and a pocket for small items. Bugaboo lists both at 26.9 lb with the seat, and the Renew lists at $1,499. So a Fox 5 makes sense when it is clearly cheaper and complete. Before you pay, confirm the bassinet, seat, canopy and adapters are included, check the serial number with Bugaboo and on the CPSC recall site, and test the fold, brake and harness. Bugaboo also sells parts and has sold refurbished Fox 5 bases, which helps if something is worn.

Bugaboo says the Renew adds fabrics made with recycled materials, new colors, a breathable mattress, a longer apron and a pocket for small items. Bugaboo lists both at 26.9 lb with the seat and says the Renew keeps all the original's features, so the frame, wheels and fold carry over.

Is a used Bugaboo Fox 5 worth buying?
