Evenflo Pivot Xpand Review: The Lowest-Cost Way to Get a Double?

Short answer: The Evenflo Pivot Xpand is worth it only if budget decides everything. At $439.99, it is one of the cheaper strollers that grows from single to double, with a 55 lb seat limit and a big basket. It weighs about 30 lb and BabyGearLab ranked its quality and handling low.

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand makes sense for a tight budget and a second child on the way. At $439.99 it undercuts most single-to-double strollers, and it takes a second seat with no tools. The cost shows in the details. It weighs about 30 lb, it folds with two hands, and BabyGearLab found it hard to push off-road and ranked it last of 20 full-size strollers. If you can stretch the budget, others ride better.

Who is the Evenflo Pivot Xpand for?

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand is for parents who want a stroller that can become a double without a premium price. Evenflo lists the Pivot Xpand Modular Stroller at $439.99, and the Pivot Xpand NXT Travel System, with an infant car seat, at $479.99. The seat takes children up to 55 lb and 43 inches. A second toddler seat or infant car seat clicks onto the frame with no tools, and Evenflo sells a Rider Board for a third child. It suits families who expect a sibling soon, drive often and want an Evenflo LiteMax infant seat to snap straight in. It is a weaker fit for parents who walk long distances, climb stairs or want a stroller that feels light and nimble. At about 30 lb and with a 90-day warranty, it is a budget tool rather than a keepsake stroller.

How does the Pivot Xpand ride and steer?

Evenflo describes large cruiser tires with a front swivel and rear suspension. The wheels use EVA material. Reviewers at BabyGearLab, who measured the Evenflo Pivot Xpand, gave it 3.0 out of 10 for maneuverability, and described foam-filled plastic wheels. They said its weight and higher seat made curbs harder, and that its wider rear axle struggled with tight turns and narrow doorways. It is fine for malls and smooth sidewalks. Rough ground, gravel and long hills will feel like work, and the weight is at its worst with two children on board. Evenflo does not list wheel sizes, so there is no size to compare. If you want to jog or hike, this is the wrong shape. For short trips to the store with one or two kids, it does the job.

How big is the Pivot Xpand when folded?

Evenflo says the Evenflo Pivot Xpand folds compactly and stands by itself with the toddler seat attached. Evenflo and Babylist list the folded size as 26.5 inches wide, 23.75 inches deep and 33.75 inches tall. Babylist gives the weight as 30.2 lb, and BabyGearLab measured 30.0 lb with one seat, about 2 lb more than Evenflo claimed at the time. BabyGearLab said the fold needs both hands and that the finger triggers are stiff. It also found the folded size, about 16,800 cubic inches, disappointing, and said it may be hard to fit into a sedan trunk. Add the weight and this is a stroller you lift with care. A mid-size SUV is the safest bet.

Is the Pivot Xpand comfortable and safe?

The toddler seat reclines in three positions, with a five-position footrest, and it can face you or the road. Evenflo lists a lay-flat carriage mode for younger babies and says the seat takes children from 4 lb on the stroller page, though that page gives 6 months for the toddler seat itself. Evenflo's travel-system page lists a height-adjustable UPF 50+ canopy. A peekaboo window, a three-position handle, a bumper bar and a cup holder are included. BabyGearLab called the harness cheap-feeling but functional. The frame is GREENGUARD Gold certified. Evenflo's travel-system page lists ASTM and JPMA certification, while the stroller-only page lists none, so confirm with Evenflo before you buy.

How much storage does the Pivot Xpand have?

Evenflo calls the basket extra-large, with access from the back and the front, and says it expands to more than 2 feet in length. Its NXT travel-system page gives a weight limit of 10 lb for the basket, and BabyGearLab lists the allowed total storage weight at 11 lb. That is a modest limit for a full-size stroller, and BabyGearLab noted the space makes it easy to overload. Keep heavy items in a bag you carry, not in the basket. A cup holder hangs off the frame side.

How does the Pivot Xpand convert to a double?

Evenflo says the Evenflo Pivot Xpand grows from single to double with a slide-and-lock system. You slide up the top attachment towers, flip out the lower towers, and click on a second toddler seat or an infant car seat. No tools or extra parts are needed. The second seat is sold separately. Evenflo's travel-system page lists up to 23 configurations, and says the frame also works with a Stroller Rider Board and a Market Basket, each sold separately. Evenflo's compatible infant seats are the LiteMax, LiteMax NXT and Revolve180 LiteMax NXT. BabyGearLab called the expandable design appealing for the price, but advised one-child families to look at a lighter single stroller instead. Before you buy, confirm the weight of two children against the 55 lb limit per seat.
